WENR-TV[]

1948–1953[]

Channel 7 first signed on the air on September 17, 1948, as WENR-TV, as the third television station in Chicago after WBKB Channel 4 (now WBBM-TV Channel 2) and WGN-TV Channel 9, and the 33rd of the U.S. The station is also the second of five ABC's original O&O stations after WABC-TV in New York City, and before WXYZ-TV in Detroit, KGO-TV in San Francisco and KABC-TV in Los Angeles.

WBKB-TV[]

1953–1962[]

Wbkb58

WENR became WBKB-TV in 1953, after ABC merged with United Paramount Theatres (UPT), the former theater division of Paramount Pictures; of which UPT subsidiary Balaban and Katz owned the old WBKB (on channel 4; sharing the CBS affiliation with WGN-TV).

In 1962, ABC commissioned designer G. Dean Smith to create a proprietary logo for its owned-and-operated stations, known as the "Circle 7". This logo has since expanded into use by many ABC stations not owned by the network. It predates Paul Rand's ABC logo by 4 months.
