The Latin American version of Disney Channel originated in 1997 as one of DirecTV's pay-per-view offerings in Brazil as Disney Weekend. This was due to a contract between Disney LA and DirecTV at that time.

Disney Weekend was later replaced by a Brazilian feed of Disney Channel on April 5, 2001.

On July 27, 2000, Disney Channel launched in the rest of Latin America, using the international Circles design package, but airing the same programs from the United States network. The channel also expanded through cable systems across the region.
