BBC News is a British free-to-air television news channel. It was launched as BBC News 24 on 9 November 1997 at 5:30 pm as part of the BBC's foray into digital domestic television channels, becoming the first competitor to Sky News, which had been running since 1989.[1]

1997–2008[]
The BBC launched their rolling news channel BBC News 24 on 9 November 1997. The channel used the new BBC logo that had been introduced slightly more than a month earlier with the words "News 24" written on the side.
A major ingredient in Lambie-Nairn's 1997 rebrand of the BBC was that all departments and services would use single colour logos that consisted of the BBC logo with the name written on the right side in Gill Sans. The personality of the services would instead be established through ident and graphics.
As idents and graphics for the new service, Lambie-Nairn continued on the flag theme that they had previously developed for BBC World and the BBC World Service. While the earlier incarnation of the flag idents had used computer-animated flags, this one would use actual flags. BBC World used the same idents.
Two years later, in October 1999, all of the BBC's news output was given a new common look by Lambie-Nairn. BBC News 24 followed suit. This time, the graphics were more traditional and featured maps and globes.
Lambie-Nairn gave a new look to the BBC News services once again in 2003 and 2007.

2008–2013[]
On 21 April 2008, all BBC News services were rebranded once again. As part of this change, BBC News 24 shortened its name to BBC News.
2013–2019[]
All BBC News services moved to New Broadcasting House in London on 18 March 2013, at 1 pm (as part of the Television Centre closure), along with revised versions of the titles, countdowns and graphics, and a modern studio set.
2019–2022[]
In early 2019, this logo began to be used in various social media images and video, with it being used on the BBC News's YouTube thumbnails since 27 March. The new logo along with new graphics featuring the BBC's new corporate font, BBC Reith, launched on-screen on 15 July.
2022–2023[]
The BBC announced that they will completely phase out the 1997 logo for their 100th anniversary. After that, they launched on-screen on 25 April at 09:00 BST.
2023–present[]
The channel merged with the international news channel on 3 April 2023.
